TOP 5 Whitsundays Anchorages
-
THOMAS ISLAND – Snug between Young Thomas Island and Thomas Island, you’ll find one of the cutest anchorages in the Whitsundays. One of the highlights is a cracking little beach that is accessible on all tides. David, Carolyn and Anthony Colfelt of 100 Magic Miles Fame say that “It has a South-Pacific atmosphere” We think that the South-Pacific was modelled on Thomas Island. Calm in most weather patterns and a brilliant sailing distance away from the ‘milk-run’, this anchorage is number one on our list for 2026.
-
BILLBOB BAY – SHAW ISLAND – Well and truly off the ‘mik-run’ for most charterers, the southern bays of Shaw Island (perfect in northerly winds) are breathtaking and wonderfully protected, with Billbob Bay being the pick. Swimming here is stunning; the dual beaches can be claimed as your own, as you’ll rarely see other boats. The climb to Mt. Arthur is trailblazing stuff, but well worth the effort. If you’re chasing off the beaten path, a sky full of stars, an extraordinary night at anchor, with not another vessel in sight, here’s a top pick.
-
WHITEHAVEN BEACH (South) – This spot is on everyone’s list, and it won’t be left off ours. Whitehaven Beach beckons with its pristine silica sands and turquoise waters. It’s a must-see for anyone visiting the Whitsundays. This beach is consistently rated as one of the best in the world. You’ll understand why as you step onto the powdery sand and gaze out at the endless blue. A sand so pure that it does not get hot in our tropical sun. It’s a place where you can unwind, surrounded by nature’s finest. The gentle lapping of waves is your soundtrack as you soak up the sun. Whitehaven is not just for lounging. If you’re feeling adventurous, take a hike up to Hill Inlet for a breathtaking view. Here, you’ll see swirling shades of blue and white, a sight that will take your breath away. It’s a natural masterpiece, waiting for you to explore.

The swirling silica sands of Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet have their own story to tell.
Millions of years old, and extremely unique! Where did the siica come from? -
BRAMPTON / CARLISLE ISLANDS – Another ripper! We love the anchorage between Pelican Island and Swordfish Point (Brampton Island), nosed into the passage known as Brampton Roads. And even though this is only meant to be a TOP 5 list, there’s another cracking anchorage at Western Bay – Brampton Island if the weather does not permit safe anchorage at Brampton Roads. Both Brampton and Carlisle Islands are gorgeous, and the anchorage, swimming and beach walking are first-class. You’ve come this far, so why not tackle the walk to the lookout on Brampton Island, and the super keen can hit-up an extended walk to Western Bay and/or Turtle Bay.
-
NARA INLET – HOOK ISLAND – Not to be missed, and most don’t. Stunning, ancient, inspiring and safe. That’s the feeling we get every time we sneak into Nara Inlet on Hook Island. The immersive walk to the cave might not be for everyone, but for those who care enough about the local, ancient history, it is not to be missed. Waterfalls are often mentioned, but to see them in full flow, you need both a good year of rain and lots of it. A classic, natural storm anchorage, and often used as a first or last night anchorage for many charterers, this place still holds all of the charm you’d ever wish for in a Whitsundays anchorage.
