Do I need a license to go bareboating?
No, you do not need a licence or experience. A full briefing is provided to ensure you are at a competent level before departure. The briefing is so thorough that even novices can give this a go!
Your briefing includes Navigation, Safety, Boat Handling, Water Safety, Boat Rules, Sailing, Motoring, Anchoring, Mooring and Emergency Safety Management Systems.
How does bareboating actually work?
The term bareboating (aka bare-boating) simply means hiring one of our extraordinary sailing catamarans without a crew, a captain or any provisions. We’ll be teaching you to do all of this yourself. YES ! – You become the skipper. But don’t worry, we teach you everything you need to know to confidently set sail (or motor) around the glorious and Ancient Ngaro Sea Country of the wonderful Whitsunday Islands.
Do we have to put the sails up?
Many of our guests don’t put the sails up and instead prefer to just motor around – it’s completely up to you.
How long is the charter?

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What should I pack for a bareboat charter?
Packing essentials will enhance your bareboating journey. Bring lightweight clothing, swimwear, reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, comfortable footwear and any personal medications you’ll need during your trip.
All charterers are self catered when they hire a boat Whitsundays guests love. However, you can make things more convenient by arranging delivery through Whitsunday Provisioning before departure. Pre-voyage, we’ll also provide guidance on what to pack so you arrive prepared with the things you may need.
What’s more, our AHOY THERE correspondence offers links for provisioning options, transfer options, snorkelling hire and more.
Is bareboating a safe activity for children?
Absolutely! Common sense and supervision are warranted on your catamaran rental holidays that will guarantee a rewarding family affair. Children can experience the joy of the water when they’re safely monitored and when everyone follows bareboat rental safety measures. To that end, our comprehensive Maritime Briefing covers navigation, safety, boat handling and the practical skills you need to feel capable in the water before setting off.
Explore the island’s hidden gems with private boat hire Whitsundays parents trust, allowing a bespoke schedule that aligns with your family’s ideal holiday vision.
What is the best time for bareboating in the Whitsundays?
While the Whitsundays are beautiful year-round, many people book a self-skippered rental between May and November for comfortable temperatures, lower humidity and relaxed conditions on the water. June through August are also popular sailing months due to the annual humpback whale migration.
Additionally, if you’d rather book bareboat rental packages from November to March, the season brings warmer weather and excellent sailing conditions, particularly on our air-conditioned catamarans. The best time ultimately depends on the experience you’re looking for and the itinerary you’d like to create.
Your yacht rental Whitsundays adventure awaits.
At Portland Roads, our mission is to make this journey as accessible and enjoyable as possible. That’s why our self-skippered Lagoon catamarans let you explore the Whitsunday Islands on your terms. One of the best parts is that there are no bareboat rental licence requirements. We even provide comprehensive Maritime Briefing and detailed pre-departure guidance to boost your confidence.
