Do I need a license to go bareboating?
No, you do not need a licence or experience. A full briefing is provided to ensure you are at a competent level before departure. The briefing is so thorough that even novices can give this a go!
Your briefing includes Navigation, Safety, Boat Handling, Water Safety, Boat Rules, Sailing, Motoring, Anchoring, Mooring and Emergency Safety Management Systems.
How does bareboating actually work?
The term bareboating (aka bare-boating) simply means hiring one of our extraordinary sailing catamarans without a crew, a captain or any provisions. We’ll be teaching you to do all of this yourself. YES ! – You become the skipper. But don’t worry, we teach you everything you need to know to confidently set sail (or motor) around the glorious and Ancient Ngaro Sea Country of the wonderful Whitsunday Islands.
Do we have to put the sails up?
Many of our guests don’t put the sails up and instead prefer to just motor around – it’s completely up to you.

No licence required for our Whitsundays bareboat charters.
A common misconception is that you need a licence for a bareboat rental, which isn’t the case with us at Portland Roads. A thorough Maritime Briefing will have you and your crew prepared with all the need-to-know skills: navigation, boat handling and even emergency protocols are covered. As such, you can go bareboat sailing in Australia without worrying about licences or prior experience.
For guests who are completely new to sailing or would like additional confidence in setting sail on their catamaran charter, additional training is available before departure. Our goal is to acquaint you with both the vessel and the marine environment. It’s this supportive touch that welcomes even Whitsunday bareboat sailing newcomers without compromising safety and respect.
Proper preparation helps you enjoy a safe and confident sailing holiday.
Before setting sail with your hire-a-boat Whitsundays package, arranging for grocery deliveries or stocking up on pre-prepared meals can save valuable time.
For added convenience, you can place an order with Whitsunday Provisioning before your charter, with groceries, drinks, ice and ready-made meal options delivered directly to your vessel ahead of your departure, usually within an hour of boarding. This means less time shopping and more time preparing to explore the Whitsundays.
Learning local boating practices is also crucial before you drive your own boat. You’ll receive a comprehensive Maritime Briefing focusing on key boating skills as part of our private sailing charter. This includes how to interpret local tide information, anchor responsibly and navigate the designated mooring areas within Australia’s Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.
Equipping yourself with local knowledge pays dividends in safety and environmental conservation, especially during sailing holidays in Australia.
Portland Roads combines local expertise with stewardship.
For more than 20 years, we’ve been guiding guests through the Whitsundays with the help of our seasoned local team. Our 6 sailing catamarans provide a solid foundation for confidence, strengthened by thorough pre-departure guidance that’s part of the bareboat charter Whitsundays Australia package.
Whether it’s your first time or you’re a seasoned sailor returning for another enchanting trip, our local insights and tailored service make your experience accessible.
We also sail with purpose, embracing sustainable practices.
Your Whitsunday bareboat sailing charter includes essential guidance on eco-friendly boating within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. We teach you techniques to minimise environmental impact, such as responsible anchoring and waste reduction, while respecting protected areas and following marine regulations.
Environmental stewardship is a core part of the Portland Roads experience, not an afterthought. Through initiatives like the TOMORROW’S REEF TODAY program, we actively support reef restoration and emphasise a NO FISHING policy within the Marine Park.
We respect local communities and encourage proper sailing practices that align with our philosophy of environmental awareness. By educating and involving our visitors in these efforts, we strive to preserve the Whitsundays for future generations. Our private boat hire Whitsundays packages bring together sustainability and enjoyment, proving that luxury and stewardship can go hand in hand.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
When is the best time to bareboat in the Whitsundays?
From May to November, the cooler months offer mild temperatures and low humidity, which are ideal conditions for comfortable Whitsunday bareboat sailing. June to August is also prime time for whale watching, as migrating humpback whales grace the waters with their presence.
For those who prefer the warmer climate, September to April provides stronger sailing winds. We’d suggest hiring one of our air-conditioned boats at this time of the year.
What should you pack for a Whitsundays bareboat charter?
Packing light and practically makes your journey more enjoyable. Using soft bags instead of hard suitcases saves precious storage space on board. Must-haves include lightweight clothing, swimwear, reef-safe sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and a light jacket for cooler nights.
Planning meals in advance and arranging provisioning for your sail Whitsundays charter helps you spend more time enjoying the water and reduces food waste.
How do you plan a Whitsundays bareboat itinerary?
Consider your top destinations, but leave room to adapt to the weather and sea conditions during your self-skipper yacht charter. We offer suggested routes tailored to your charter length while encouraging custom adjustments for comfort and safety.
Prior to departure, a comprehensive Maritime Briefing covers local navigation tips, helping create an itinerary suitable for your Whitsunday bareboat sailing experience and the environment’s demands.
