What is Bareboating?
You become the skipper
Bareboating simply means hiring one of our catamarans without a crew or captain. We teach you everything you need to know – and yes, no licence or experience is required.
A full pre-voyage briefing covers navigation, safety, boat handling, sailing, anchoring and mooring. So thorough that even complete novices set sail with confidence.

Do I need a license to go bareboating?
No, you do not need a licence or experience. A full briefing is provided to ensure you are at a competent level before departure. The briefing is so thorough that even novices can give this a go!
Your briefing includes Navigation, Safety, Boat Handling, Water Safety, Boat Rules, Sailing, Motoring, Anchoring, Mooring and Emergency Safety Management Systems.
How does bareboating actually work?
The term bareboating (aka bare-boating) simply means hiring one of our extraordinary sailing catamarans without a crew, a captain or any provisions. We’ll be teaching you to do all of this yourself. YES ! – You become the skipper. But don’t worry, we teach you everything you need to know to confidently set sail (or motor) around the glorious and Ancient Ngaro Sea Country of the wonderful Whitsunday Islands.
Do we have to put the sails up?
Many of our guests don’t put the sails up and instead prefer to just motor around – it’s completely up to you.
How long is the charter?
All charters are for 6, 13, or 20 days.

Licences don’t stand between you and your self sail Whitsundays holiday.
There’s no need for a boat licence to enjoy a self-skipper experience. If you want to drive your own yacht, rest assured that every booking includes a comprehensive pre-departure Maritime Briefing covering navigation, safety, vessel handling and the everyday essentials.
Self guided sailing (also known as bareboating) often feels far less technical than what you might imagine. Our charters are suitable for just about anyone. The journey ahead is an island escape where you decide when to move, where to pause and how each day unfolds.
Our fleet of six Lagoon sailing catamarans spans from entry-level models to ultra-premium vessels. With our range, it’s easier to find a luxury self sail boat that reflects your group, the comfort you value and the kind of time you want to create together with your partner, mates or family.
Independent sailing in the Whitsundays is also just one way to enjoy the journey. If you’d rather travel under power, every vessel can be operated as a bareboat charter Whitsundays adventure, leaving you free to take in the islands without building the holiday around raising the sails.
Your time on the water unfolds your way.
We offer 6, 13 or 20 Day self navigation sailing experiences, giving you the freedom to choose a shorter island escape or settle into a longer journey through one of Australia’s most spectacular island destinations.
Plus, we understand that plans can change, which is why our 7-day Change of Mind / Cooling Off Policy applies for every self sail boat for hire. This gives you a clear window to secure dates without feeling locked into a self sail catamaran Whitsundays holiday straight away.
When everything’s settled, rest assured that your self sail catamaran in the Whitsundays includes practical support and satellite communications. This helps you enjoy greater independence on the water without feeling disconnected when you need assistance.
Enjoy your self sail Whitsundays trip your way.
After you book a self sail holiday in the Whitsundays, your days can move between morning swims, snorkelling close to the reef, relaxed beach stops and quiet time aboard your catamaran. With 74 islands to explore, your crew can create a rhythm that feels unique to your interests.
To give you an idea, you can spend more time in a secluded bay, head ashore for a walk or enjoy an unhurried afternoon sunbathing on deck before settling in for the evening. With our Whitsunday bareboat charters, there is no fixed group itinerary deciding the pace for you.
Your AHOY THERE correspondence will also include links for provisioning options, transfers, snorkelling hire and more. The most favoured option is Whitsunday Provisioning, who can conveniently deliver your groceries, sous vide meals, drinks, water, alcohol and ice to your vessel within an hour of your boarding time. This helps keep packing simple before your self sail Whitsundays holiday begins.
Responsible sailing adds meaning to the experience.
Through our bareboat self sail in the Whitsundays, we promote sustainable sailing practices that help minimise impacts on marine ecosystems while allowing you to experience the region’s natural beauty firsthand and up close.
Our TOMORROW’S REEF TODAY philosophy supports reef restoration, a NO FISHING stance in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, respect for local communities and much more.
If you’re looking for a bareboat charter Airlie Beach visitors can trust, these commitments reflect our role as passionate custodians of Mother Earth. We help ensure your time in this World Heritage-listed environment is both memorable and sustainable. We also hold a particular interest in our local mob, including the Ngaro, Giya and Juru.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is the best sailing itinerary for beginners in the Whitsundays?
When it comes to self sail Whitsundays itineraries, the best one for beginners should match your preferred comfort level, weather conditions and pace. You can always start with shorter passages between sheltered bays, easy anchorages and well-known stops such as Whitehaven Beach, Hook Island or nearby snorkelling areas.
You don’t need to cover all 74 islands in one self sailing Whitsundays trip. Keep the first few days simple, leave room for rest and adjust your route as confidence grows. We can also recommend practical options if you tell us more about your ideal experience. Rest assured that there’s no rush, and you can return for more next time.
What is the difference between a bareboat and a crewed charter?
The main difference between a bareboat and a crewed charter is who runs the vessel. With a private self sail in the Whitsundays charter, you become the skipper and choose your own route, timing and daily plans. That gives you more freedom and control over your holiday.
On the other hand, a crewed charter includes a professional skipper and, in some cases, additional crew, such as a host or chef, who manage the sailing and onboard service for you. If you want the freedom to create your own adventure, our self skippered sailing in the Whitsundays offers a flexible and rewarding way to experience these beautiful islands.
Can we change our itinerary once we’re on the water?
Yes. One of the biggest advantages of a self sail Whitsundays holiday is the flexibility to adapt your plans as you go. You can spend longer in a favourite bay, visit a different island or adjust your route to suit the weather and your group’s preferences.
As long as itineraries for a self sail holiday remain within your designated cruising area and follow the guidance provided during your briefing, you’re free to make the most of your time on the water.
