Do I need a license to go bareboating?
No, you do not need a licence or experience. A full briefing is provided to ensure you are at a competent level before departure. The briefing is so thorough that even novices can give this a go!
Your briefing includes Navigation, Safety, Boat Handling, Water Safety, Boat Rules, Sailing, Motoring, Anchoring, Mooring and Emergency Safety Management Systems.
How does bareboating actually work?
The term bareboating (aka bare-boating) simply means hiring one of our extraordinary sailing catamarans without a crew, a captain or any provisions. We’ll be teaching you to do all of this yourself. YES ! – You become the skipper. But don’t worry, we teach you everything you need to know to confidently set sail (or motor) around the glorious and Ancient Ngaro Sea Country of the wonderful Whitsunday Islands.
Do we have to put the sails up?
Many of our guests don’t put the sails up and instead prefer to just motor around – it’s completely up to you.
How long is the charter?

‘Bare’ refers to the absence of onboard staff, not the amenities. Your yacht comes fully equipped, so you can simply settle in and enjoy your holiday at your own pace.
Whether you’re planning a luxury bareboat charter or simply looking for a more relaxed island escape, a bareboat charter Whitsundays adventure puts you in control of your itinerary, allowing you to explore secluded bays, beaches and island anchorages whenever you choose.
Couples can spend slow mornings overlooking a quiet bay, enjoy breakfast on deck and then decide when it’s time to head to the next destination. Families can fill their days with swimming, beach stops and island exploration, while a self-skippered boat provides a comfortable base for meals, downtime and time on the water.
Friend groups can mix scenic island walks, snorkelling spots and relaxed afternoons at anchor, choosing when to head ashore and when to slow down. With 74 islands to explore, every bareboat charter Airlie Beach holiday offers something different.
Compared with crew-led holidays, a self-sail Whitsundays journey gives you complete control over your itinerary, so each day unfolds the way you choose.

A 6 Day charter is ideal if you already have a list of places you’d like to visit, while 13 or 20 days give you more time to explore, linger in your favourite anchorages and enjoy the journey at a relaxed pace.
Our fleet includes 6 Lagoon catamarans, ranging from entry-level to ultra-premium, with options to suit different group sizes, comfort preferences and budgets. If you’d rather use motor power, our vessels can also be operated that way, so you can enjoy a self-drive yacht experience.
