Do I need a license to go bareboating?
No, you do not need a licence or experience. A full briefing is provided to ensure you are at a competent level before departure. The briefing is so thorough that even novices can give this a go!
Your briefing includes Navigation, Safety, Boat Handling, Water Safety, Boat Rules, Sailing, Motoring, Anchoring, Mooring and Emergency Safety Management Systems.
How does bareboating actually work?
The term bareboating (aka bare-boating) simply means hiring one of our extraordinary sailing catamarans without a crew, a captain or any provisions. We’ll be teaching you to do all of this yourself. YES ! – You become the skipper. But don’t worry, we teach you everything you need to know to confidently set sail (or motor) around the glorious and Ancient Ngaro Sea Country of the wonderful Whitsunday Islands.
Do we have to put the sails up?
Many of our guests don’t put the sails up and instead prefer to just motor around – it’s completely up to you.

Whitsunday bareboat hire offers a different way to experience the Whitsundays, putting you in control of how your time on the water unfolds, and with 74 islands to discover, what’s not to love?
Unlike traditional tours and many Whitsunday bareboat charters, you are not confined to a group schedule or limited by someone else’s plans. Instead, you can enjoy a more personal and flexible sailing holiday through one of Australia’s most spectacular coastal and island destinations.
Whether you’re planning a romantic escape, a family getaway, or a trip with your besties, a self-skippered catamaran charter allows you to experience the Whitsundays from a unique perspective.
Portland Roads Sailing the Whitsundays helps bring that to life with local knowledge, quality vessels and personalised service from a local, family-owned team.
Fixed itineraries can limit the freedom and personalisation that make a Whitsundays holiday truly memorable.
Traditional tours restrict where you go and how long you can enjoy the region’s most spectacular locations.
Organised tours often operate on fixed schedules designed to suit large groups. This can limit the time you spend at iconic destinations, secluded anchorages and snorkelling locations that often become highlights of any sailing adventure.
If you discover a quiet bay you love or want to spend an extra afternoon swimming, relaxing or exploring, there is often little flexibility to do so. By comparison, Whitsunday bareboat hire allows you to set your own pace and spend more time enjoying the places that leave the greatest impression.
If sailing is not your thing, no problem, each of our vessels can be operated as motor yacht charter Whitsundays-wide, while others prefer the experience of a sailing adventure. For many guests, bareboat sailing is more rewarding when they can make decisions for themselves rather than follow a predetermined schedule.
This approach to bareboat hire can create a stronger connection to the World Heritage-listed Whitsundays and the places you explore along the way.
At Portland Roads, we give you the freedom to create an itinerary tailored entirely to your group, interests and pace.
With us, your holiday revolves around the experiences that matter most to you. Whether you’re planning a family-friendly bareboat holiday, want to snorkel vibrant reefs, visit sun-kissed beaches, enjoy peaceful overnight anchorages or simply unwind on the water, each day can be shaped around your interests.
Departing from Coral Sea Marina at Airlie Beach, Portland Roads supports your Whitsunday bareboat hire experience with local knowledge and more than 20 years of experience helping guests enjoy self sailing Whitsundays-wide with confidence.

Responsible bareboating connects you more deeply with the Whitsundays and its cultural heritage.
Portland Roads promotes responsible sailing practices that help protect this remarkable, World Heritage environment.
The Whitsundays form part of the globally significant Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, making responsible boating an important part of every Whitsunday bareboat hire experience. As custodians of this special environment, we promote sustainable sailing practices that help minimise impact on marine ecosystems while allowing guests to experience the region’s natural beauty firsthand and up close
For those planning a multi-day yacht charter in the Whitsundays, responsible boating helps protect the natural environment that makes the region so special. Through practical guidance and responsible boating principles, guests are encouraged to navigate carefully, respect protected areas and help preserve the health of the reef.
Engaging in self sail Whitsundays journeys also encourages a deeper appreciation of the region’s natural and cultural heritage, contributing to a more meaningful tropical island sailing holiday in Australia.
This approach allows you to enjoy a memorable Whitsunday bareboat hire adventure while supporting the long-term protection of one of the nation’s most treasured natural environments.
A genuine commitment to First Nations understanding encourages greater appreciation of Ngaro Sea Country and the region’s rich cultural history.
Portland Roads has a genuine commitment to fostering greater understanding of the First Nations peoples connected to the Whitsundays, including the Ngaro people, whose connection to these islands spans thousands of years.
Guests are encouraged to view the region not only as a holiday destination but also as an important cultural landscape shaped by generations of knowledge, tradition and stewardship. As you explore Ngaro Sea Country with respect and awareness, you gain a richer perspective on the Whitsundays and the enduring cultural heritage that continues to shape the region today.
