Do I need a license to go bareboating?
No, you do not need a licence or experience. A full briefing is provided to ensure you are at a competent level before departure. The briefing is so thorough that even novices can give this a go!
Your briefing includes Navigation, Safety, Boat Handling, Water Safety, Boat Rules, Sailing, Motoring, Anchoring, Mooring and Emergency Safety Management Systems.
How does bareboating actually work?
The term bareboating (aka bare-boating) simply means hiring one of our extraordinary sailing catamarans without a crew, a captain or any provisions. We’ll be teaching you to do all of this yourself. YES ! – You become the skipper. But don’t worry, we teach you everything you need to know to confidently set sail (or motor) around the glorious and Ancient Ngaro Sea Country of the wonderful Whitsunday Islands.
Do we have to put the sails up?
Many of our guests don’t put the sails up and instead prefer to just motor around – it’s completely up to you.

Learn More About Whitsunday Bareboat Charters
Highlights
- Whitsunday bareboat charters are for everyone, regardless of experience. They are more achievable than many first-time travellers expect, feeling more like a self-guided island holiday than a highly technical sailing experience.
- You don’t need a formal boat licence to enjoy the trip, because we provide a comprehensive pre-voyage Maritime Briefing covering navigation, safety and practical boat handling.
- A bareboat charter gives your group the freedom to shape each day around beaches, bays, snorkelling, hikes and quiet anchorages without being locked into a fixed schedule.
- We support different travel styles with a fleet of Lagoon sailing catamarans across entry-level, premium and ultra-premium options.
- We also combine flexibility with responsible tourism. Our TOMORROW’S REEF TODAY philosophy supports reef restoration, a NO FISHING stance in the Marine Park, respect for local communities, and much more.
If you’re looking to go on a sailing holiday, consider Whitsunday bareboat charters. These offer a unique way to explore the stunning Whitsunday Islands, allowing you to captain your own vessel without needing a boat licence.
Whether you want a bareboat charter Airlie Beach-wide or in other thrilling places in the Whitsundays, we’re here for you.
At Portland Roads Sailing the Whitsundays, you get more than just a boat rental. We’re a family-owned business with over 20 years of local expertise. We are passionate custodians of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, ensuring your bareboat charter experiences are both memorable and sustainable.
Whitsunday bareboat charters are simpler than you might think.
Many first-time travellers picture a bareboat yacht charter as a technical sailing challenge or a highly technical experience. In practice, it really feels more like a self-guided island holiday, where you move between beaches, bays and anchorages at your own pace.
Bareboating simply means you’re hiring a catamaran without a crew or captain. You’re not locked into a fixed schedule when you sail your own boat, Whitsundays-style. Instead, you choose where to go, how long to stay and what kind of adventure you want across the Whitsunday Islands.
That freedom has made yacht hire in the Whitsundays one of Australia’s most recognised holiday experiences. This sailing adventure gives couples, families and friends a way to take in the amazing views with independence, comfort and genuine exploration.
For more than 20 years, we have helped guests enjoy self-skippered charters with confidence. That experience is even reflected in more than 500 five-star Google reviews and our recognition as Tourism Whitsundays’ Gold Winner for Best Bareboat Operator.
You do not need sailing experience to enjoy a bareboat charter.
Self-sail Whitsundays opportunities are not only for experienced sailors. We understand that you want a holiday that feels free, active and different from the usual resort stay, and bareboat charters can be a welcoming way for first-time guests to travel around the islands.
You don’t need a formal boat licence.
We make it possible for people to enjoy bareboat sailing holidays in Australia, regardless of their level of experience.
You don’t have to go through formal training for a qualification. We’ll help you prepare properly before you depart on Whitsunday bareboat charters. Rest assured that your comprehensive pre-voyage Maritime Briefing covers navigation, safety, boat handling and the practical skills you need to feel capable before setting off. And if you only wish to motor your way around the island, no worries.
If you’re looking for a sail or motor yacht charter Whitsundays-wide, we offer 6, 13 or 20 Day skipper-yourself experiences. This gives you enough time to settle into life on the water, build confidence and explore the Whitsunday Islands at a relaxed pace. Just choose the direction of the adventure (or take inspiration from our 74 island recommendations), and we’ll make sure you’re ready to take the helm.
Whitsunday bareboat charters give you the freedom to explore your way.
Private boat charters give you the freedom to linger where you love. That might mean more time on a secluded beach, a quiet island anchorage, a fringing reef or simply relaxing on the water with no fixed schedule pulling you away.
With a Whitsunday bareboat hire, you can shape each day around what your group wants most, from snorkelling and hiking to island walks and slow afternoons between anchorages.
We have a fleet of 6 Lagoon sailing catamarans, so you get options across entry-level, premium and ultra-premium experiences. Whether it’s a romantic holiday or family sailing trip, you can choose a catamaran that suits your group size, comfort expectations and holiday style.
Above all, the flexibility to explore the islands also follows responsible tourism. We are proudly Carbon Neutral and Advanced Eco-certified. Our self-sail charters also support reef restoration projects and NO FISHING in the Marine Park.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How do food and drinks work on Whitsunday bareboat charters?
When it comes to self-sail catamaran Whitsundays adventures, guests handle their own food and drinks. This gives you full control over what your group eats and drinks while you’re away. Your AHOY THERE correspondence will be filled with links for provisioning options, transfer options, snorkelling hire and more.
The most favoured option is using the services of Whitsunday Provisioning, with all of your groceries, sous vide meals, drinks, water, alcohol and ice delivered to your vessel within an hour of your boarding time.
When is the best time of year to do a bareboat charter in the Whitsundays?
The Whitsundays are beautiful year-round. However, many people go for a private yacht holiday during May to November for comfortable temperatures, lower humidity and relaxed conditions on the water. Warm days, steady trade winds and easy access to beaches, reefs and islands make this one of the most popular times for bareboat charter Whitsundays trips.
June through August bring these same benefits, with the added magic of the Humpback Whale migration.
Our tropical heat begins to build from September to March. If you go for Whitsunday bareboat charters at this time, you can enjoy warmer island days and magnificent winds for sailing. It’s a vibrant season to experience the islands your way, with each day shaped by the conditions, your crew and the places you choose to explore. We’d suggest hiring one of our air-conditioned boats at this time of the year.
Are Whitsunday bareboat charters safe for couples and families?
Yes. A yacht charter holiday can be a safe, rewarding holiday for couples and families when guests follow onboard safety procedures and local guidance throughout the trip. Our catamarans carry essential safety equipment to give your group the comfort and stability to explore the Whitsunday Islands confidently.
