Do I need a license to go bareboating?
No, you do not need a licence or experience. A full briefing is provided to ensure you are at a competent level before departure. The briefing is so thorough that even novices can give this a go!
Your briefing includes Navigation, Safety, Boat Handling, Water Safety, Boat Rules, Sailing, Motoring, Anchoring, Mooring and Emergency Safety Management Systems.
How does bareboating actually work?
The term bareboating (aka bare-boating) simply means hiring one of our extraordinary sailing catamarans without a crew, a captain or any provisions. We’ll be teaching you to do all of this yourself. YES ! – You become the skipper. But don’t worry, we teach you everything you need to know to confidently set sail (or motor) around the glorious and Ancient Ngaro Sea Country of the wonderful Whitsunday Islands.
Do we have to put the sails up?
Many of our guests don’t put the sails up and instead prefer to just motor around – it’s completely up to you.
How long is the charter?

Unlike most motor cruisers, the Lagoon catamarans are the most economical motor boat in charter.
At Portland Roads Sailing the Whitsundays, our catamarans can be sailed or motored, making them well suited to a motor yacht adventure while giving you the flexibility to create a private yacht charter experience that suits your travel style.
From choosing the right catamaran to planning your time on the water, there’s plenty to consider before setting off on your Whitsundays holiday. If you’re ready to sail your own boat Whitsundays-wide, we’ll help you understand what to expect as you plan your holiday.

A motor yacht charter Whitsundays adventure offers a practical introduction to private boating holidays, with the freedom to explore on your own terms.
No licence is required to get started.
We don’t require any licence or previous sailing experience. As a result, going on a motor yacht charter Whitsundays-wide is more accessible than many travellers expect. Skippering yourself offers the same independence as a self sail catamaran Whitsundays holiday without needing prior sailing or motor vessel credentials.
Every booking includes a comprehensive pre-departure Maritime Briefing covering navigation, safety, boat handling, satellite communications and the practical skills needed to feel confident before leaving the marina.
Whether you’re no stranger to power boating or planning your first motor yacht cruise in Whitsundays, the briefing helps you feel capable before setting off. It also helps you enjoy this style of yacht charter in Australia, knowing you have the practical knowledge to make the most of your time.
Alongside these, our 6-, 13- or 20-day skipper-yourself experiences combine the freedom to captain your own catamaran with the flexibility to sail or motor around the Whitsundays. This gives you the flexibility to choose the timeframe that suits your plans and lets each day unfold at your own pace.
Choose the right catamaran for your Whitsundays adventure.
Selecting a catamaran is an important part of planning a motor yacht charter Whitsundays. The right vessel helps shape your overall experience, from the space you have on board to the way you explore the islands.
Our fleet includes 6 Lagoon motor/sailing catamarans: SV Whitsunday Freedom, SV Lawless, SV Lucy, SV Portland Roads, SV Ruby Sunday and SV Due West. Whether you’re travelling as a couple, with family or as part of a larger group, there’s a catamaran to suit a range of comfort levels and budgets for your self sail Whitsundays holiday.
From our classic economy range to ultra-premium options, different cabin layouts and onboard features make it easier to find a catamaran that suits your group. For those looking to hire a motor yacht, our fleet offers a vessel to suit different travel styles while providing a comfortable base on the water.
Every catamaran can be sailed or motored, giving you the flexibility to enjoy a motor cruiser charter, private cruises in Whitsundays or simply explore the islands your way.
Once you’ve found the right catamaran, it becomes more than just your transport. It’s where you’ll share meals, unwind after a day exploring the islands and wake up to a different view each morning. That’s all part of what makes motor yacht holidays so memorable and why many travellers continue to choose Whitsunday bareboat charters.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Can beginners enjoy a Whitsundays bareboat charter?
Yes. We don’t require a licence, and we make sure all boaters get a pre-voyage Maritime Briefing.
Many first-time guests enjoy a Whitsundays bareboat charter because the experience is about exploring the islands rather than becoming an experienced sailor overnight.
Similar to a bareboat charter Whitsundays holiday, short cruising distances between popular anchorages mean you can spend more time swimming, snorkelling, relaxing on secluded beaches and exploring island walking tracks.
What should you pack for a Whitsundays bareboat holiday?
Soft bags are easier to store than hard suitcases because they’re lighter, more compact and make better use of the available space. For a motor yacht charter Whitsundays adventure, pack sun protection, quick-dry clothing, swimwear and a light jacket for cooler evenings.
Books, games, music and a camera or phone with plenty of storage can also make relaxed evenings on board more enjoyable while helping you capture memorable moments throughout your trip.
Which Whitsunday Islands should you include in your yacht itinerary?
With 74 islands to choose from, the best itinerary depends on your charter length, weather conditions and the experiences you want to enjoy along the way. Popular stops such as Whitehaven Beach, Hook Island, Thomas Island, Shaw Island and Brampton Island each offer something different.
Embarking from Airlie Beach gives you the flexibility to tailor your itinerary around the places that interest you most, making it a great bareboat charter Airlie Beach adventure. You can also adjust your plans to suit the conditions and your crew’s interests.
Enjoy your coastal adventure on your terms.
